Overview of MeKong

The Mekong is situated in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea. The Mekong delta region occupies an area of 39,000 square kilometers (15,000 sq mi). Recently dubbed as a ‘biological treasure trove’, over 10,000 new species have been discovered in previously unexplored areas of the Mekong Delta. Some of the main cities around the Mekong are Can Tho, My Tho, Chau Doc, Ha Tien, Ca Mau and Phu Quoc Island. The area had about 17.4 million people at last census.

The region is famous as a large rice growing area. It produces about half of Vietnam’s rice output. In the Mekong Delta, life revolves a lot around the river, and a lot of areas are only accessible by boat. You will see some of the nicest scenery around in this area. With the construction of Can Tho Bridge completed in 2010, the region is more accessible instead of the previous ferry crossing that took forever. Travel and package tours to the Mekong are specifically designed to show you the best sights around. Enjoy tranquil boat rides, visit lively water markets and get to know the wonderful people who call the Mekong home.
