Life’s a Beach in Cambodia
Koh Rong is one of the largest islands in Cambodia, and is known to many Westerners as “Monkey Island.” In fact, the name of the island can be loosely translated as “Cave Island.” Koh Rong is an important piece of the Koh Rong Archipelago, which is situated in the Gulf of Thailand. This island is one of the loveliest in the country, with over 40 kilometers of white-sand beach, kissed by both the tropical sun and clear waters.
There are numerous beaches right in Koh Rong, including the Southwestern Beach. This beach is very popular for being a good snorkeling spot—make sure to get your gear and spend a delightful day watching parrotfish, sergeant fish, and rabbit fish in glorious Technicolor. Getting to this beach is quite easy if you are coming from Sihanoukville.
Long Set Beach is another favorite in Koh Rong, thanks to its usually tourist-devoid expanse of sand, which is perfect for lying under the tropical sunshine, and leisurely collecting seashells or crabs. If you are up for some night swimming, make sure to watch out for the bioluminescent plankton that lights up the waters when the moon is waning.
Koh Rong Samloem
Located just four kilometres south of the gorgeous Koh Rong island, Koh Rong Samloem is one of the best beach destinations in Cambodia. This small island’s coastline is made picturesque by golden-sand beaches and a number of sandstone rock formations. Snorkeling and diving are great in this island, plus, the sunsets are to die for.
Situated around 18 kilometers off from Sihanoukville, Ream National Park is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Cambodia, Koh Thmei. The park itself is a great spot to visit, thanks to its tropical jungles and mangrove forests, but the beaches are definitely exquisite. Koh Thmei is home to a wide variety of birds and gorgeous golden sand beaches. There are a couple of bungalows along the beach for visitors who would like to stay the night, but the island is mostly uninhabited.
The seaside town of Sihanoukville is one of the more popular destinations in Cambodia, and t is also the home of Sokha Beach. This beach is privately owned, and it is clearly the best in all of Sihanoukville thanks to the fine white sand and clear placid waters. A small part of Sokha Beach is open to the public, but the private section is great for those who want a bit of peace and quiet.
